The Medallion by Médaro Rosso Trannes. Why am I, a seemingly modest sculpture, built-into the wall of this church? It’s a mystery. The artist whose hands made me was Italian, Médaro Rosso (1858-1928). This contemporary of Rodin sought a less powerful style of expression. Close to the Impressionists he tried to render light with his chisel. A fitting heir to the Gothic and Renaissance sculptors from Champagne created here a mother and child. She shows the truest, most carnal love that incarnates hope in life and mankind. I’m like an ancient votive offering. I am the witness to the passage of an artist who may have left me as thanks for his welcome in this corner of Champagne. |
