Virgin Mary Dosches
As I am
French, and Parisian: the aristocratic simplicity of the features
of my
face are softly framed by wavy hair, the balance of
my garment whose regular folds are hardly enlivened by a slight sway
of the hips, and even the wisdom of the small Jesus that blesses,
all this suggests my creation at the end of the reign of the blessed
Queen Jeanne of Navarre, who remained with us as Countess of Champagne… there
is only my tall and sumptuous crown and maybe the lively colours
that covered the wood of which I am made, that can attest on the
artist’s behalf to a more emphatic freedom of expression .
The sceptre decorated with fleurs-de-lis that I held in my right
hand, which has now gone, was there to accentuate my royal and slightly
inaccessible character, like the recumbent figures of the « cursed
kings » in the basilica of Saint-Denis.
